With his movie debut Control star photographer Anton Corbijn one of the most successful British films of recent years. The expectations for his second film were correspondingly large. Naturally, then, that Corbijn did not want to be committed to a genre and the novel A Very Private Gentleman filmed a thriller. The adaptation, entitled The American is still much less action film than the trailer wants us to believe.
